Zlatan punishes Toronto defense
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice as the LA Galaxy defeated Toronto FC 2-0 on Thursday evening at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Ibrahimovic opened the scoring in the 75th minute, with a back post header past across Quentin Westberg in the Toronto goal, after an excellent cross from Efrain Alvarez.
The Swedish striker made it two in the 89th minute as the Toronto defense was asleep and did not react to a quick pass into the middle from the left.
The Toronto defense was also at fault for the opener, failing to keep with Ibrahimovic as he released from his defender, and instead of coming away with a point, Toronto FC returns empty handed.
LA Galaxy, 10/1 to win the MLS Cup, sit all along in second place after the result, six points behind LAFC, while with a five-point advantage over the chasing pack in the Western Conference.
The Galaxy have two more home games upcoming, first against the San Jose Earthquakes before a showdown with LAFC.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference DC United missed an opportunity to keep the pressure on the Philadelphia Union, winners on Wednesday at Orlando City in Florida, when they lost 2-0 to FC Dallas.
Harold Mosquera and Dominique Badji were on target for the hosts, at the Toyota Stadium, who are unbeaten in five consecutive home fixtures in MLS.
FC Dallas jumps from seventh to third in the Western Conference with the win, level on points with the Seattle Sounders and behind LAFC and the LA Galaxy.
Dallas will hit the road a week from Saturday to play Minnesota United while DC United are back in action next Friday when the New England Revolution are the visitors.
