Zaragoza end six-month wait for victory with win over Antequera

Real Zaragoza have ended a six-month wait for victory after beating Antequera on Saturday, securing their first success since March and giving the club a much-needed lift in Spain’s third tier.

The result came in a meeting between two sides enduring similarly difficult fortunes. Antequera were described as Zaragoza’s “neighbour in misfortune” in the division, with both clubs struggling to find consistent results. For Zaragoza, however, the win carried particular significance because it brought an end to a run that had stretched across the closing stages of last season and into the current campaign.

The club’s previous victory had come on 29 March, when Zaragoza were still competing in Segunda Division. On that occasion, they defeated Racing 2-0. The circumstances have changed considerably since then: Racing are now playing in Primera, while Zaragoza have dropped to Tercera.

That long period without a win covered 11 matches from last season. Zaragoza lost seven of those games, underlining the scale of the club’s difficulties and the pressure that had built around the team. The sequence then continued into the new campaign, when Zaragoza were beaten by Gimnastic in their first match of the season.

Saturday’s victory over Antequera therefore represented more than three points. It stopped a prolonged run of disappointing results and offered evidence that Zaragoza may finally be beginning to recover from the problems that had dominated the previous six months.

The win also provides a positive moment for a club with a distinguished history. Zaragoza are former winners of both the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, but those past achievements had offered little comfort during a period in which victories had proved increasingly difficult to secure.

The contrast with their last success could hardly be clearer. In March, Zaragoza prevailed against Racing with a two-goal margin while competing in Segunda Division. Since then, Racing have moved into Primera, whereas Zaragoza are now operating in Tercera and had been unable to produce a winning result in 12 consecutive matches across the two campaigns.

The victory over Antequera has now brought that sequence to an end. It does not erase the setbacks that came before it, including the seven defeats recorded during last season’s winless run and the loss to Gimnastic at the start of this campaign. But for Zaragoza, it represents the first sign of progress after six months of frustration.

The club can now look towards what was described as the familiar “light at the end of the tunnel” following a result that has finally halted its lengthy wait for a victory.
