Zachary Athekame’s impressive Lyon start follows Marseille interest
Zachary Athekame has made a strong start to life at Olympique Lyonnais after Marseille also considered signing the 21-year-old during the summer transfer window.
The right-back joined Lyon on a season-long loan from AC Milan and has quickly established himself in the Rhone, contributing two goals and two assists.
Olympique de Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi confirmed to L’Equipe that the club had assessed Athekame’s profile before the move was completed. Marseille also held discussions with the player, while head coach Bruno Genesio was involved in the process.
However, the interest did not lead to a deal. Marseille’s financial difficulties, together with restrictions imposed as part of its supervision by the DNCG, meant the club made no signings during the summer window.
Athekame subsequently moved to Lyon on loan from AC Milan without an option to buy. His performances have so far made that decision appear particularly beneficial for Olympique Lyonnais, while Marseille continue to face a difficult period.
The player, who has Nigerian roots, remains under contract with AC Milan until 30 June 2030. His estimated market value is 15 million euros.
Lyon’s next fixture will come against Lens in the sixth round of the French championship. The match is scheduled to take place shortly, with listed odds of 2.40 for a Lens victory, 3.80 for a draw and 2.65 for a Lyon win.
