Yan Diomande embraces pressure despite limited Real Madrid opportunities
Yan Diomande says he is comfortable with his limited playing time at Real Madrid and welcomes the pressure that now surrounds his performances for Cote d’Ivoire.
The 19-year-old winger has quickly become one of the main attractions of the Ivorian national team, although he is still working to establish himself at club level in Spain.
Even as a substitute, Diomande is now one of the players supporters most expect to make an impact. On Saturday, his introduction after an hour against Cameroon lifted the atmosphere inside the Alassane Ouattara stadium. Operating from the left, the Real Madrid player came close to equalising, only for his effort to be saved by Simon Ngapandouetnbu in Cote d’Ivoire’s 1-0 defeat.
Speaking to NCI after the match, Diomande gave a frank assessment of the result before discussing the contrasting demands of club and international football.
Under Herve Renard, he has already earned considerable trust with Cote d’Ivoire. At Real Madrid, however, the competition for places is much stronger and his progress has been more gradual.
Diomande said he was not troubled by the difference in his status.
“There is nothing that changes. I train a lot, even if I do not play much there, and the training sessions are intense. It is pleasing that the coach trusts me and gives me a lot of playing time,” he said.
Rather than complain about his role in Madrid, the former Leipzig player acknowledged the situation and highlighted the work required to remain prepared whenever he joins up with the Elephants.
His move to Real Madrid, combined with his growing importance to Cote d’Ivoire, has also changed the way he is viewed. But when NCI asked how he was coping with being described as a “superstar”, Diomande rejected the label.
“It is always good. We should forget this superstar story; I remain the same. For you, perhaps I am one, but I remain the same. Above all, it is a pleasure to play for my country. I feel better than anywhere else whenever I represent the flag,” he said.
He is similarly unfazed by the increased scrutiny placed on each of his performances.
“I love it when there is pressure because it allows me to surpass myself. I also play for a club where there is a lot of expectation,” Diomande added.
His comments reflect a player occupying two very different positions: still trying to secure a regular role at Real Madrid, while already becoming one of Cote d’Ivoire’s most eagerly anticipated players.
For now, Diomande appears to be managing both responsibilities with considerable composure.
