Yakubu Tips Lookman to Thrive at Atlético Madrid After €40m Switch
Former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has backed Ademola Lookman to succeed following his high-profile move from Atalanta to Atlético Madrid, describing the transfer as a proud moment for Nigerian football, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Lookman completed a permanent transfer to the Spanish giants on the final day of the winter transfer window, with Atlético Madrid paying €40 million to secure the services of the Super Eagles winger from Serie A side Atalanta.
Reacting to the move, Yakubu revealed he was not surprised by Lookman’s decision to leave Bergamo, insisting the winger had long outgrown the club. Speaking to Africa Foot, the former Everton striker said he always expected Lookman to make a step up to a bigger stage this winter.
Yakubu added that Atlético Madrid is a fitting destination for the 26-year-old, stressing that Lookman has earned the right to play for one of Europe’s elite clubs. He expressed confidence that the former RB Leipzig and Leicester City attacker will bring quality, goals, and positivity to Diego Simeone’s side.
Lookman leaves Atalanta after three-and-a-half impressive seasons, during which he scored 55 goals and provided 27 assists in 137 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the most decisive attackers in Italian football.
The Nigerian international is now in contention to make his debut for Atlético Madrid in Thursday night’s Copa del Rey quarter-final clash against Real Betis, as he begins a new chapter in La Liga.
