Harry Winks feels he is now an "important player" in the Tottenham squad after his "best season so far" last term.

The 23-year-old England international midfielder has made impressive progress since making his first-team debut against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League in 2014.

Winks became a regular in boss Mauricio Pochettino's plans in the 2016-17 season when he made 33 appearances, before an ankle injury restricted his game time in the following campaign.

I played a lot of matches, started a lot of matches and it was incredible, probably my best season so far at the club.

The former academy starlet broke through the 100 appearances milestone during the course of last term as he made 41 outings for the team, including in the 2-0 Champions League final defeat against Liverpool on 1st June.

And, as Spurs look to take the next step and win some silverware next season, Winks believes that he is now a crucial part of the team.

"I had a relatively injury-free season last year until the end," he told Spurs' official website. "I played a lot of matches, started a lot of matches and it was incredible, probably my best season so far at the club."

"I feel I've become an important player now and I couldn't ask for more," he added.

"If you'd asked me three or four years ago if I wanted to be in this position now I would have snapped your hand off, but the most important thing now is not to get carried away, to work as hard as I can and try to stay in there and maintain that position because there are so many top players here.

"Staying in is the hardest. It's fantastic to get there, but staying there is tough with so many top quality players at the club, all wanting to start."

Tottenham, who are 5/2 to win a major trophy next season, start their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 10th August.

Spurs are 2/9 to win, while Villa are priced at 12/1 and the draw is 19/4.
