Why Ismael Doukoure’s Ivory Coast debut has been put on hold

Ismael Doukoure has missed out on his first Cote d’Ivoire call-up despite being selected by Herve Renard, with an injury cited as the reason for his withdrawal. However, the defender’s eligibility to change his sporting nationality appears to be the main issue behind the late reversal.

The 23-year-old Strasbourg centre-back had been expected to join the Elephants during the current international break after Atalanta defender Odilon Kossounou pulled out. Journalist Malick Traore initially reported that Doukoure would replace him.

Instead, Junior Diaz of Troyes was called into the squad, leaving Cote d’Ivoire supporters confused. Radio Nostalgie provided further details about the situation on Monday.

According to the Ivorian radio station, Doukoure was first approached by former Cote d’Ivoire manager Jean-Louis Gasset, who has since died. The player declined at that stage because he wanted to establish himself at club level first.

The case was subsequently taken up by Emerse Fae and his staff. At the same time, France made repeated attempts to persuade the defender, who represented Les Bleus from under-19 level through to the under-23s.

His versatility has made him an attractive option to France manager Zinedine Zidane. Doukoure can play on either side of central defence, as a defensive midfielder or at right-back.

Despite that interest, Doukoure chose Cote d’Ivoire. The Lille-born player had spent more than a year completing the administrative process required to obtain Ivorian nationality. His representatives say the Elephants had always been the priority for the player, who is a committed admirer of Yaya Toure.

He was approached about taking part in the 2026 World Cup but postponed his international arrival. As captain of RCS, Doukoure did not feel it would be appropriate to join a team after not featuring during the qualifying campaign.

His representatives confirm that he was formally called up by Renard before Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 match against Paris FC last Saturday, which Strasbourg lost 2-1. He had received his Ivorian passport less than 72 hours earlier and was due to arrive in Abidjan on Sunday evening.

After playing the entire match, though, Doukoure felt discomfort. An MRI scan was carried out in Paris on Sunday morning, after which he withdrew from the squad.

“The player is disappointed,” his representatives said, adding that he would have another opportunity to join the national team.

However, the injury is believed to have concealed a separate administrative problem. Under a new FIFA rule, Doukoure was not, in practical terms, able to submit his request to change sporting nationality within the required deadline of 15 days before the start of the international break without the passport he had only held for less than 72 hours.

Unless there is another change of plan, he is expected to join Cote d’Ivoire during the next international window.
