Wanderers hand Adam two-year scholarship
Just two days after making his debut for Western Sydney, teenage striker Mohamad Adam has signed a two-year scholarship contract.
Adam marked his Wanderers bow with a goal in the 2-1 FFA Cup win over last season's minor premiers Perth Glory.
The Sudan-born forward is the 10th player in this season's A-League squad to progress through the club's academy into the senior squad.
Former Marconi Stallions player Adam said: "I was stoked after the contract was handed to me. Straight away I called my dad, my family and friends and they were very happy for me...it's their dream come true.
"I had a chat with [football operations manager] Gavin [Costello] about my future at the club and he said 'keep going the way you are in the NPL and eventually I'll offer you a contract.' He stuck to his word."
Speaking of club coach Markus Babbel, Adam said: "He said to me that he doesn't care how old I am, if I am 18 or 34; if I am good enough, he'll put me on, I just have to show myself. Markus sees me as a striker and that's where I do my best and I have a big impact with the team."
Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar could start the new season with English defender Tom Aldred as their captain.
The former Motherwell player donned the armband for the Roar's 2-0 FFA Cup victory over last season's A-League champions Sydney FC in midweek.
It was his first competitive fixture for Robbie Fowler's side, and increases the chances the 28-year-old will be the coach's choice when the league campaign starts in October.
Aldred, who has also captained the team in pre-season friendlies, said: "I feel like I have got the qualities to be a captain in terms of how I lead the team.
"There is numerous leaders in the dressing room as well which makes it easier for myself if I am to wear the armband."
Brisbane Roar are 16/1 to win the A-League Grand Final. The Roar are 6/1 to win the FFA Cup.
