Vilakazi Distances Himself from Nwabali’s Chippa United Exit
Chippa United head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi has admitted that he was not involved in the discussions that led to the departure of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali from the club, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The Nigerian international recently brought his four-year stay with the Chilli Boyz to an end after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract. The decision came just weeks after his return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he played a key role in Nigeria’s third-place finish.
Since arriving in the South African Premier League in 2022 from Katsina United, Nwabali established himself as one of the division’s most reliable goalkeepers. His consistent performances earned him the captain’s armband at Chippa United and opened the door to the Super Eagles, where he has grown into the country’s undisputed number one.
His impressive displays have attracted interest from several prominent African clubs, including Raja Casablanca, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs, while reports have also linked him with potential moves beyond the continent. Despite previous transfer talks failing to materialise, speculation about his future persisted for months before his eventual exit was confirmed.
Reacting to the development, Vilakazi disclosed that he was not part of the conversations surrounding the goalkeeper’s departure, suggesting that the decision was handled at a different level within the club’s structure.
Nwabali’s exit leaves a significant void for Chippa United, given his leadership role and influence on the pitch. The club will now be tasked with finding a capable replacement as they look to regroup following the loss of their captain and first-choice shot-stopper.
