Patrick Vieira will start his tenure as Senegal head coach in Maputo after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed that the team’s Africa Cup of Nations 2027 opener against Mozambique has been relocated.

The match was originally scheduled to take place in Dakar on Friday, 25 September 2026. It will now be played in Maputo on the same date, after the FSF requested the change.

The federation said it had contacted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Mozambique Football Federation, with both organisations approving the move.

The decision means Vieira will not make his first competitive appearance in charge in front of Senegal supporters. His appointment as the successor to Pape Thiaw has already been marked by uncertainty, with the former France international yet to speak publicly about taking over the Lions of the Teranga and questions surrounding his contract having delayed clarity over his arrival.

The FSF said neither of Dakar’s two main stadiums could properly host the fixture.

Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, which has become Senegal’s principal venue, will be unavailable because it is due to host the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

The alternative, the historic Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, also was not considered suitable. The federation said its pitch “is not, at this stage, in optimal condition to host an official match of this scale”.

The request to move the game was also made by Senegal’s national technical department. The FSF said it wanted to protect the players’ health, preserve the quality of the competition and “take no risks”.

The condition of the two venues is an unwelcome development while Senegal is aiming to host the Africa Cup of Nations in three years.

In sporting terms, the change does not alter the fact that Senegal would have been expected to play Mozambique away during the qualifying campaign. However, it adds to the unusual circumstances surrounding the opening weeks of Vieira’s reign and follows a series of problems that have emerged since the World Cup.

Vieira was appointed after Thiaw’s difficult departure, with uncertainty over Thiaw’s own contract contributing to the disruption. Further questions were raised over how Vieira’s contract would be funded, while the final approval from the Senegalese state also remained pending.

The new coach has yet to formally introduce himself to Senegal supporters or speak publicly about his new responsibilities. He was at least expected to begin his tenure with a match in Dakar, but that will no longer happen.

Vieira’s first assignment will instead be in Maputo, where Senegal will meet the Mambas in the opening round of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027. The Lions of the Teranga will then play away against Ethiopia on 29 September before travelling to Marseille for a friendly against Comoros.
