Vieira sets clear route back to Senegal for unattached Krepin Diatta

Patrick Vieira says Krepin Diatta must resolve his club situation quickly if he is to return to the Senegal squad.

The 27-year-old was left out of Vieira’s first selection since becoming Senegal manager, despite being a regular under former boss Pape Thiaw. Diatta played every minute for the Lions at the 2026 World Cup, but his current lack of club football has cost him a place in the new manager’s team.

Vieira explained the decision at his news conference, saying: “He does not have a club and he has not played, which is why he is not on the list.”

Diatta has been without a club since his contract with AS Monaco ended. The versatile Senegal international has won 65 caps and scored 2 goals for the Lions, while also offering the ability to play in several positions on the right.

Roma, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, had shown an interest in the player. Gasperini’s teams traditionally make use of highly attacking wing-backs, a role that appeared to suit Diatta, but the move did not materialise.

Konyaspor are now reportedly close to signing him.

Vieira stressed that Diatta’s omission should not be viewed as a permanent exclusion and made clear that he remains part of his plans if he returns to regular football.

“He is a player I like very much. He had a very good World Cup. He needs to resolve his situation as quickly as possible so that he can be selected for the national team,” Vieira said.

The message from the new manager is both direct and encouraging. Diatta’s route back into the Senegal squad is dependent on securing a club, regaining match fitness and playing regularly.

His position in the national team had grown significantly over recent years. Under Thiaw, he became an almost automatic starter, while his performances and involvement at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his standing within the squad.

However, his absence also underlines one of the early principles of Vieira’s tenure. The former France international has said he wants to retain Senegal’s identity and continuity rather than “break everything up”, but established reputations alone will not guarantee selection.

Even a player with 65 caps who featured throughout the most recent World Cup must show that he is competing regularly at club level.

For Diatta, the solution appears straightforward: find a new club and return to action. Until then, his prolonged period without a team will continue to keep him out of Senegal’s plans.
