Union crush DC United
The Philadelphia Union moved three points clear of Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference standings on Sunday with a 5-1 triumph over DC United at Audi Field.
Alejandro Bedoya opened the scoring with a low right-footed shot from outside the penalty area in the 3rd minute.
DC United's woes were compounded in the 40th minute when Junior Moreno was sent off for the hosts for denying a goal scoring opportunity.
Kacper Przybylko missed the ensuing penalty, but made up for blazing the ball over the bar by scoring early in the second half.
That goal made the score 3-0 with Marco Fabian already having added a second, and Philadelphia cruised to the 5-1 win to reclaim the top spot in the Conference.
It's been a bumpy ride for the Union in recent weeks with Philadelphia unable to string together any run of results.
Fortunately for the Union the rest of the contenders in the Eastern Conference have been similarly challenged although it has allowed Atlanta and the New England Revolution to move into contention and play-off places respectively as those around them have faltered.
Over in the Western Conference Minnesota United joined the San Jose Earthquakes and the Seattle Sounders on 38 points, tied for second behind LAFC, with a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.
An Ethan Finlay VAR penalty in injury time was the difference as the Loons were more than a little fortunate to take three points from the contest.
