Tussle Continues As Keshi’s Burial Place Undecided
A definite decision is yet to be taken on the spot for the burial site for late former Super Eagles captain and head coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, as his children want their father to rest next to their mother’s grave in Benin City.
The children’s wish, though, appears in contrast with tradition, as community leaders from his ancestral home in Illah, Delta State insist the corpse should be brought home for interment.
Conjoined with the issue of Keshi also dying inter-state, as he did not have a will before passing on, the matter of the late icon’s final resting place could not be solved during a meeting his children had with football official and other stakeholders on Tuesday.
The view of elders taken up on the issue is that, as a High Chief of the Illah kingdom in Delta State, Keshi should ordinarily be buried in his ancestral home but the legend’s children are said to be thinking otherwise.
They prefer Benin City, where the man regarded as the best all-rounder in Nigerian football played for New Nigeria Bank FC as captain and later captained Nigeria for 15 years.
The children want their father to be buried besides his wife’s grave at his Benin home, but the governments of both Delta and Edo States were yet to take a stand on the matter up till late Tuesday.
However, sources close to the secretary to Delta State Government said they will rather have the late ‘Big Boss’ buried in Illah.
Ironically, those in Edo State at the moment are nonplussed over the issue, which could thereby leave the children on their own, even as the siblings, led by Jennifer Keshi also met with Sports Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung on Tuesday in Abuja.
Family sources also hinted that because Keshi did not leave a will before his death, the issue of where to bury him and who gets what as inheritance have become very intricate.
At the same time, head of the extended family, Sylvester Keshi has reportedly been left out of all plans to give the former Eagles captain and 2013 AFCON winning manager a befitting burial.
“He never expected death and nobody expected that he will pass on as he did but it happened and put everybody in a quandary,”
