Trent Kone-Doherty hits first Molde hat-trick to underline rapid rise

Trent Kone-Doherty further enhanced his growing reputation in Norway by scoring three times in Molde FK’s 5-1 win over HamKam on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Ivory Coast winger struck in the 56th, 58th and 84th minutes as Molde secured a convincing victory on matchday 21 of the Norwegian championship. It was his first hat-trick since joining the club and another indication of the progress he is making during his first professional season.

A breakthrough performance in front of goal

Kone-Doherty’s treble takes his league record to six goals and one assist after 21 matches. Across all competitions, he has scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 19 appearances.

Those figures underline his increasing influence in Molde’s attack. His performance against HamKam also reflected a player becoming more effective in the decisive areas of the pitch, having already established himself as an important part of the Norwegian side.

The hat-trick marked another significant step in a promising campaign for the young winger, whose first experience of senior football is continuing to develop at pace.

Liverpool experience helped shape his career

Before moving to Norway, Kone-Doherty spent time in the Liverpool academy. He joined the club in the summer of 2022 and regularly represented the Reds at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level.

His time at Liverpool also included two appearances for the first team. He made his senior debut as a substitute against Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup in February 2025.

He later featured again for Liverpool against Crystal Palace in October of the same year. In February 2026, Kone-Doherty completed a permanent move away from the club to join Molde.

The transfer has given him regular first-team football and the opportunity to take the next step in his development. His performances suggest he is making the most of that opportunity, with his attacking pace and movement increasingly matched by end product.

Long-term deal reflects Molde’s faith

Molde have secured Kone-Doherty’s services until 31 December 2029, a contract that demonstrates the club’s confidence in the 20-year-old.

His current market value is estimated at 800,000 euros, although that figure could rise if he maintains his present form.

Kone-Doherty’s speed, attacking work and improved finishing have provided him with a strong platform to continue developing. The three goals against HamKam may prove to be another milestone in the emergence of an Ivory Coast player whose profile is growing in Norway.

Molde’s next match in the Norwegian championship will be their 22nd of the season, against Aalesund FK.
