Togo held by Libya in frustrating CAN U23 qualifying draw

Togo were held to a 1-1 draw by Libya at home on Wednesday in their CAN U23 qualifying tie, despite controlling much of the match and producing the more convincing football.

The Eperviers U23 impressed with their build-up play and passing combinations, but lacked the accuracy and composure needed in the decisive areas. Their dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard as Libya were forced to retreat for long periods.

Togo continued to control possession from the start, constructing attacks effectively and creating promising situations around the visitors’ penalty area. However, they struggled to turn those openings into clear chances and went into half-time without a goal.

The hosts were punished early in the second half after a misunderstanding in their defence allowed Libya to take the lead. Togo responded by increasing the pressure and repeatedly attacking in search of an equaliser, but their finishing remained a problem.

Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the 77th minute when Koumeyi Fadouloudin levelled the match and revived Togo’s hopes in the tie.

The Eperviers continued to push for a winner in the closing stages, but neither side could find another goal. The draw leaves the qualification contest completely open ahead of the return leg, which will be played on 6 October in Misrata.
