Timbers stun LAFC
The Portland Timbers punched their ticket for the semi-finals of the US Open Cup on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over LAFC at the Banc of California Stadium.
Portland followed up their impressive victory against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx over the weekend by stopping short any aspirations LAFC might have had of completing the double this season.
With six minutes remaining in regulation Jeremy Ebobisse was the fortunate recipient of a backward pass from an LAFC defender and the Portland youngster took full advantage to bury the opportunity.
LAFC, 5/2 to win the MLS Cup, the LA Galaxy (10/1) and the Seattle Sounders (16/1) are currently the top three teams in the Western Division standings and they have all have fallen victim to the Timbers in the US Open Cup.
Currently fourth in the standings are Minnesota United FC and coincidently they will now be the opponents for Portland in the semi-finals. The results in the Cup have so far belied the Timbers' league position, which is in part a consequence of playing their first 12 MLS games on the road.
Minnesota showed no pangs of sentimentality when they played New Mexico United of the USL. Cinderella is not going to the ball this year as the Loons crushed their opponents 6-1.
Surprisingly the visitors led after seven minutes at the Allianz Field with Santi Moar getting on the scoresheet for New Mexico. Just 16 minutes later it was 4-1 as Angelo Rodriguez scored twice and there were also goals for Darwin Quintero and Jan Gregus.
Rodriguez completed his hat-trick before half time with Miguel Ibarra completing the scoring in the second half.
