Timbers entertain the Whitecaps
There's an important Pacific Northwest clash on tap on Saturday when the Portland Timbers welcome in the Vancouver Whitecaps to Providence Park.
The Timbers have lost their three previous encounters with the Whitecaps, but need to change that streak if they are to challenge Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas for the playoff places in the Western Conference.
Portland currently trails Dallas by two points with two games in hand and Salt Lake by three points, but having played one game less.
The Timbers also are playing more games at home than their rivals, after starting the season playing 12 consecutive games on the road, but need to turn that advantage into actual points.
Portland was disappointed to lose twice to Minnesota United this past week, once in MLS play and then also in the semifinal of the US Open Cup.
The latter was particularly painful for the Timbers having done the hard work previously in getting the better of the Seattle Sounders, the LA Galaxy and LAFC, although Minnesota, currently tied for second in the Western Conference, was in no way a pushover.
Meanwhile the Whitecaps arrive in Portland tied for the worst mark in MLS when it comes to wins this campaign.
Vancouver has only won five games all season, although ironically one of those was against the Timbers, and only the expansion side FC Cincinnati has been so woeful.
Nine draws have, however, allowed the Whitecaps to stay above the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference standings.
Vancouver snapped a nine game MLS winless streak last time out with a 2-1 over Cincinnati on the road.
Portland Timbers are 3/10 to win, with the Whitecaps 8/1 and the draw priced at 9/2.
