The Portland Timbers moved up to ninth in the Western Conference on Sunday as they defeated New York City 1-0 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

It was a fine result for the Timbers who appear to be artificially low in the standings in the Western Conference after starting the season with 12 consecutive games on the road due to stadium renovations back in Portland.

Not surprisingly the Timbers struggled without a home field advantage, but the benefit was in learning to win on the road, not least when they defeated the Philadelphia Union, the leaders of the Eastern Conference, back in late May.

Sebastián Blanco scored the only goal of the game against City on Sunday when the hosts failed to clear a free kick in the 14th minute.

It was a sloppy goal for New York to give up and the surprise was that the home side did not respond in better fashion.

New York City had been undefeated in 13 games in all competitions going back to a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Toronto FC in late March.

The result leaves City in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, a point behind the Montreal Impact and Atlanta United in the standings.

Atlanta could have moved past DC United into second place, but were held 3-3 at home by the New York Red Bulls.

Josef Martínez for Atlanta appeared to have won it for the hosts in injury time before Bradley Wright-Phillips equalized two minutes later.

New York City FC are 8/1 to win the MLS this season, with Los Angeles FC 5/2 and LA Galaxy 10/1.
