Sydney crush 10-man Mariners
Central Coast Mariners' nightmare campaign continued as they crashed 5-2 at Sydney FC.
The Mariners suffered a ninth consecutive defeat, leaving them only two losses away from equalling the A-League record.
The visitors took a surprise lead in the first half, through Connor Pain's powerful finish, but things began to go wrong when Kalifa Cisse was sent off in the 26th minute.
The 10 men held out until half-time, but within seven minutes of the restart they were behind and Alex Brosque went on to grab a hat-trick as the Sky Blues romped to victory.
It was veteran Brosque's first treble in the competition, while Adam le Fondre made history with his goal.
The former Reading striker scored to become the fastest player to the 10-goal mark in an A-League season, netting from the penalty spot to put his side ahead.
He had won the penalty when he was caught by Jacob Melling in the area, a decision which incensed Mariners coach Mike Mulvey.
Cisse was guilty of two brain snaps in the space of three minutes to earn his dismissal. He was booked for kicking the ball away, then clattered into Siem de Jong and was handed a second yellow card.
The visitors had gone ahead when Pain did well in the area to make room for a shot and gave keeper Andrew Redmayne no chance with his shot.
The home side weren't able to take advantage of the extra man until the start of the second half, when de Jong's cross from the right was glanced home by the heel of Brosque.
It was a de Jong ball that set le Fondre free in the area when he won the penalty, although Mulvey argued it was an incorrect decision as Melling had got to the ball ahead of le Fondre, his back leg caught the striker.
Reaching the 10-goal mark in 11 games meant the English player beat the record held by Bruno Fornaroli.
Ben Kennedy made an excellent save to deny Brosque's header, but the skipper was alert to the rebound and netted his second goal to make it 3-1.
His superb chip over Kennedy six minutes later competed Brosque's hat-trick and, after Aiden O'Neill had pulled one back for the Mariners, Aaron Calver volleyed home at the far post in the final minute to complete the victory.
Meanwhile, Australia are 13/2 to win the Asian Cup.
