Sunderland give Kevin Danso a chance to make Tottenham move permanent

Sunderland have completed the loan signing of Tottenham central defender Kevin Danso, with the agreement including a conditional obligation to buy worth £22m.

The Black Cats confirmed the arrival of the 27-year-old Austria international on their official website. Danso will remain at Sunderland until the end of the season, when the temporary move could become a permanent transfer.

The obligation to purchase the defender will be activated if Sunderland retain their Premier League status at the end of the current campaign. The fee has been set at £22m, which is equivalent to €25.6m.

Danso’s move gives Sunderland a potential long-term solution in central defence while also linking the player’s future to the club’s position in the Premier League. If Sunderland avoid relegation, the terms of the agreement require them to complete the transfer.

The defender joined Tottenham from French club Lens a year ago for €25m. Before making that move permanent, Danso had previously represented the north London club on loan.

In total, the Austrian made 52 appearances for Tottenham. His latest switch takes him to Sunderland on another temporary deal, although the structure of the agreement means he could remain with the club beyond the end of the season.

Sunderland’s announcement did not disclose any further conditions attached to the transfer. The club described the arrangement as a loan running until the conclusion of the season, with the £22m purchase obligation dependent specifically on Premier League survival.

Danso’s career has therefore included spells with both Lens and Tottenham before his latest move to the Black Cats. His transfer from Lens to Tottenham was completed for €25m, while the potential payment agreed by Sunderland is £22m.

The Premier League status clause is central to the deal. Sunderland will have the opportunity to retain Danso permanently if they remain in the division, but the obligation to buy will only take effect if that sporting condition is met.

For now, Danso has joined Sunderland on loan from Tottenham. The defender’s future will ultimately be determined by the outcome of the club’s current Premier League campaign.
