After a second successive Serie A defeat, which followed on from a Coppa Italia exit to Lazio, Inter coach Luciano Spalletti was again critical of his team’s mental approach when things go against them.

Federico Santander grabbed the only goal of the game for Bologna, ending a 14-match winless streak in Serie A in Sinisa Mihajovic’s first game since taking over from Pippo Inzaghi.

“I told my team how I want them to play,” Spalletti told the press. “But at the moment I don’t see the right attitude.

“We see from week to week how they react. We need clear and concrete answers, strong reactions and seriousness on the pitch.”

Just like last year, Inter have gone through a negative period of form in January though Spalletti isn’t sure there is a link.

“It depends on how things develop,” the Inter coach went on. “It adds on to the little things which have already happened.

“An injury, a suspension, and moments that run counter to that. Thus, self esteem is lacking. Even from those who are full of enthusiasm.

“Being able to work in a certain way determines the reaction in the players, little changes then change that condition.”

Looking at the specific incidents which have negatively affected Inter, Spalletti looked at the character of certain players and how they react.

“I have chosen quality players,” the Inter coach continued. “Anything said about winning titles and wearing the shirt then becomes a mental burden.”
