“Congratulations to Petagna and the team on an important win,” was Luciano Spalletti’s message at the end of Napoli’s dramatic late win away to Genoa.

“I spoke to Petagna during the week and asked if I could rely on him if I selected him. He told me not to worry because he was ready and motivated. He gave a brilliant response, particularly on the pitch.

“Andrea has key qualities, especially when we get the ball up to him. I know what he can do and I know that he has to be in control of his destiny. He scored a real striker’s goal today.”

The coach mentioned the tactical decision to play Lorenzo Insigne at centre forward: “Lorenzo can play in that position. He really helped the team out and he has the quality to express himself there. Unlike [Dries] Mertens, he prefers to have the ball at his feet, while Dries attacks the space. He isn’t available at the moment, but Lorenzo showed out there today how good he can be in that position, too.”

As for Genoa’s ruled-out goal, the boss said, “It was a clear foul on [Alex] Meret. [Aleksander] Buksa jumped into him just to disturb him as he came out because he couldn't get to the ball. The VAR decision is correct.”
