Former Super Eagles and Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has failed in his bid to secure a playing contract with Championship side Charlton Athletic.

According to dailymail.co.uk, Ameobi who has been a free agent since leaving Crystal Palace, spent time training with Charlton, but the club’s coaching team opted against signing him.

Ameobi has found difficulty in securing a new club since departing Selhurst Park with Bolton, WolverHampton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday offering him a trial but not a deal.

The 34-year-old had a brief stint in Turkey, featuring 11 times for Gaziantepp BB and scoring four goals.

During his time with Newcastle, Ameobi featured in 312 games, scoring 53 goals.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil where they got to the round of 16.
