Leroy Sane is facing a lengthy lay-off after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in the Community Shield, Manchester City have confirmed.

The German winger, who limped off in the early stages of Sunday's penalty shootout win over Liverpool at Wembley, is to undergo surgery in the coming week.

It will come as a blow to Pep Guardiola, after he spent the summer trying to warn off interest from Bayern Munich in Sane's signature.

"Manchester City can confirm that Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," the club said in a statement on their website.

"He has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury.

"Leroy will have surgery in the coming week. City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the club wishes him a quick and full recovery."

Sane has been offered a new contract at the Etihad Stadium but has not yet signed. He has two years left on his present deal and the 23-year-old was the subject of intense speculation this summer.

Ilkay Gundogan and Benjamin Mendy have both spent several months on the sidelines with similar problems in recent seasons, ensuring Sane is deemed likely to face the same layoff.

Sane played 47 times for City last season, scoring 16 goals along the way as the club won a domestic treble for the first time in their history.

Man City are 1/2 to win the Premier League this season, with Liverpool 13/5 to better last season's second and Spurs priced at 18/1.
