Sandro Mazzola remembered as a ‘true Inter icon’ by Christian Chivu

Inter head coach Christian Chivu has paid tribute to Sandro Mazzola after the club legend died in Milan on 19 September at the age of 83.

“We have lost a true Inter icon,” Chivu said of the former Italy international and long-serving Nerazzurri captain.

Mazzola spent his entire senior club career with Inter, representing the Italian side from 1961 to 1977. He made 418 appearances and scored 116 goals in the Italian championship.

During his time at the club, Mazzola won the Italian title four times and lifted the European Cup twice, as well as claiming a number of other trophies.

He also enjoyed a distinguished international career with Italy, scoring 22 goals in 70 appearances.

Mazzola was part of the Italy side that won the European Championship in 1968 and finished as World Cup runners-up two years later.
