Gary Rowett was appointed manager of Derby County in March

Derby County manager Gary Rowett says he is keen to give the club's youth-team players a first-team opportunity.

Midfielder Luke Thomas, 18, came off the bench in the 89th minute of Tuesday's 2-0 Championship victory over Queens Park Rangers at Pride Park.

"It is very difficult when we have so many players, but we want to expose these young players to first-team football," Rowett told BBC Radio Derby.

"I think it's five young players we have given debuts to this season."

Thomas, who recently signed a three-year contract, joined the Rams from Cheltenham for an undisclosed fee in January 2016 and spent the 2016-17 season on loan at non-league Gloucester City.

A confusing debut

Rowett revealed that he gave Thomas some important information before he entered the field for his debut, but he failed to take it all in.

"I gave him once piece of advice which was 'start on the right and put Andy (Andreas Weimann) onto the left'," Rowett added.

"He came on and I think he got a little bit overawed by the occasion and he sent Andy on the right and he went over to the left.

"So he got his only bit of information wrong for the evening, but I think that's just because of the sheer excitement coming onto the pitch."
