Brendan Rodgers says Leicester City faced an impossible task in replacing Harry Maguire this week as rival clubs sough a chunk of the £80m price tag.

England defender Maguire left the Foxes for Manchester United after 12 months of speculation he would make the switch to Old Trafford.

Leicester being the new season at home to Wolves on Sunday, a game they are 5/4 to win.

It was always then going to be a very difficult market.

Brendan Rodgers

Asked whether clubs increased the asking price for their players in the knowledge the Foxes had money to spend, Rodgers replied: "Yes - simple as that.

"We looked but the market proved too difficult. But we're equally comfortable working with the players we have."

While Maguire's departure has left a gap, Rodgers insists he is content with the central defensive options at his disposal now.

"It was always then going to be a very difficult market. But the club prepared for that eventually a year ago; they brought in two outstanding young centre-halves in Caglar [Soyuncu] and Filip [Benkovic]," he added.

"We knew we had those guys there, along with Jonny Evans, who is a top centre-half. Wes Morgan as well, who is a great leader and great captain."

His side are 7/2 to break into the Premier League's top six this season having finished 14 points adrift of Manchester United last term in ninth spot. The former Liverpool boss isn't shying away from cutting back that gap.

"Everyone talks about getting into the top six. We want to knock as heavily as possible on that door and get there," he said.
