Brisbane Roar put in a five-star performance to ease their wooden spoon fears with a 5-3 win away to Central Coast Mariners.

The visitors pulled eight points clear of Mike Mulvey's side with what was just their third victory of the campaign.

They put on a dazzling show, with some outstanding goals including Eric Bautheac's contender for goal of the season that opened the scoring.

The first three goals were fantastic ... I thought we were the better side, but it was a shootout.

Darren Davies

The Mariners really needed to pick up what would have been just their second win to retain hopes of avoiding a second consecutive bottom-place finish.

But they finished empty-handed and with only nine men, after both Aiden O'Neill and Matt Simon were sent off for second bookable offences in the second half.

Roar interim coach Darren Davies said: "We're good for entertainment and I'm over the moon for the boys. The first three goals were fantastic ... I thought we were the better side, but it was a shootout."

Bautheac put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark when he chested down the ball with his back to goal and acrobatically fired beyond keeper Ben Kennedy.

Alex Lopez doubled the advantage two minutes later, powering the ball home with a volley from the edge of the area.

The action was only warming up at this stage, as there were three more goals to come in the final seven minutes of the first half.

Central Coast pulled one back when Connor Pain guided a header over keeper Jamie Young, but in the final minute of the half Brisbane made it 3-1 as Tobias Mikkelsen's glancing header looped beyond Kennedy.

The Mariners reduced the arrears in injury time, O'Neill firing home first time with a low shot.

Kennedy wasn't at his best nine minutes into the second half when he was wrong-footed by Lopez's second goal of the match.

The points were safe with 15 minutes to go when the Roar made it 5-2, Dylan Wenzel-Halls going through one-on-one with Kennedy and sending his shot through the keeper's legs.

Central Coast managed a late consolation when Jordan Murray headed in off the inside of the post.

Meanwhile, league leaders Perth Glory are 17/20 to win their next game against Western Sydney, who are 16/5 with the draw 14/5.

The Glory are 10/1 to win the game 1-0.
