Riyad Mahrez is expected to join Al Shamal in the coming hours, with the former Manchester City winger poised to continue his club career in Qatar after leaving Al Ahli Djeddah.

The 35-year-old Algeria international recently ended his career with the national team but has no plans to retire from football altogether. Mahrez, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner, remains determined to take on a new challenge at club level.

His future had been the subject of considerable speculation during the summer transfer window. Possible moves to Italy, Spain, Turkey and Brazil were all discussed, with Como showing interest. Deportivo La Coruna and several Turkish clubs were also linked with the player, while Botafogo emerged as a potential destination in South America.

Al Shabab deal failed to materialise

The most serious possibilities, however, appeared to be in the Gulf region. A return to Saudi Arabia was considered a natural option given Mahrez’s recent spell there, and a second period at Al Ahli Djeddah was even discussed.

Supporters of the Saudi club had hoped to see the former Manchester City player return, but it was another side from the Saudi Pro League that came closest to securing his signature.

Mahrez was on the verge of joining Al Shabab, according to an exclusive report by Africafoot. The move ultimately did not go through, leaving the Algerian seeking another opportunity.

That search now appears to be nearing an end. DZfoot reports that Mahrez is set to commit his future to Al Shamal, with the transfer expected to be completed shortly.

The player is currently in Dubai, where he is continuing his physical preparation to maintain his fitness before joining a new club. His stay there could therefore precede a move to Qatar.

Asian challenge awaits

Al Shamal finished as runners-up in Qatar and will compete in the Asian Champions League this season. The competition is familiar territory for Mahrez, who has won the trophy in each of the past two editions with Al Ahli.

His continental experience could prove valuable to a team aiming to challenge strongly in domestic competition while also competing against the leading clubs in Asia.

A move to Al Shamal would give Mahrez the chance to begin a new chapter in a league he has not previously experienced. After spells in England, France and Saudi Arabia, the Algeria international would be heading to Qatar with the same objective: to remain influential on the pitch while bringing his experience to a new project.
