Rice serves up Irons warning
England international Declan Rice believes West Ham have to target qualifying for Europe by finishing in the top seven in the Premier League this season.
The 20-year-old midfielder helped the Hammers end up in tenth place last term, but Rice believes that a higher finish than that is something of a must for the Londoners, who have recruited several new players already this summer.
We have to be aiming for Europe with the squad we have now.
Declan Rice
Rice told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast: "We have to be aiming for Europe with the squad we have now. Anything below that is a failure and most of the players would say that.
"We finished 10th, but we had so many chances to finish seventh. We have to improve our away form and our consistency."
The major arrivals at the London Stadium are striker Sebastien Haller and Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals.
France Under-21 international Haller has joined for £45million from German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, while two-time Spain international Fornals has been drafted in for £24million from Villarreal.
The Hammers begin their Premier League season with a visit from reigning champions Manchester City at lunchtime on Saturday 10th August, with the hosts having lost all seven of the most recent meetings of the two sides.
The clash of the teams at the London Stadium last season ended in a 4-0 victory for the Citizens, with the visitors three goals to the good within 34 minutes.
West Ham can be backed at 19/4 to hold City to a draw, while the Londoners are 12/1 to secure a top-six finish come the end of the season.
