REVEALED: Fans Choose Who They Think Should Be Leading the Line for England
"?Sam Allardyce will take charge of his first game for England this Sunday as the Three Lions look to put painful memories of Euro 2016 behind them with a strong start to the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign against Slovakia.
Big Sam named his maiden squad last weekend, featuring a handful of new and returning faces, but now attention will turn to who exactly gets the nod to start. And, most importantly, who among the group will be asked to lead the line and score the goals.
Responding to a 90min poll, 67,504 fans made their feelings on the subject known.
More than a third (36%) believe that Allardyce should be placing his faith in Jamie Vardy. The Leicester striker scored 24 Premier League goals last season en-route to the Premier League title but wasn't at the forefront of Roy Hodgson's thoughts at the Euros in June.
The 29-year-old has already got off the mark for the season in a domestic setting, scoring with a trademark goals after running onto a through ball in the Foxes' win over Swansea last week
Behind Vardy, an equal number of fans chose Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney, each with the support of 25% of those who voted.
Kane actually finished ahead of Vardy in the Premier League goal charts last season and had scored three international goals in his first four senior appearances before slowing down more recently. He was the one favoured by Hodgson at the Euros but actually failed to find the net at all in France and looked off the pace at the tournament in general.
Combined with the fact the Tottenham favourite is still to open his club account in 2016/17, that is perhaps something that influenced people before they voted.
It comes as something of a surprise that Rooney has as much support as he does. The captain has long been England's most criticised and most heavily scrutinised player, while he was actually listed as a midfielder when the squad was formally announced. You cannot argue with his record breaking goal tally, though.
Last in fan's thoughts is Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. He remains part of the England setup, but last season's injuries and fitness problems have left him down the pecking order at Liverpool. Just 14% who voted feel that he is the best option to lead the line for Allardyce's new look national team at this moment in time.
