Rep. Ireland hold Denmark, set up Dublin decider
The Republic of Ireland held Denmark to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their UEFA World Cup playoff in Copenhagen on Saturday night.
Denmark had the better of the first-half chances and should have scored just past the half-hour mark when a rebound from a Christian Eriksen shot fell to Pione Sisto whose half-volley blazed just wide of the far post.
Content with a goalless draw, Martin O'Neill's team sat back and dared Denmark to break them down, while twice hitting on the counter with Shane Long shooting wide from the right before Robbie Brady's attempt from distance skied over the crossbar.
Denmark nearly had the winner right before full-time, but Darren Randolph palmed away Yussuf Poulsen's header following a corner kick to preserve Ireland's clean sheet.
The two teams meet again on Nov. 14 for the decisive second leg in Dublin to determine who will advance to the 2018 World Cup.
