Red Bulls defeat New York City
The New York Red Bulls were the victors in a pulsating encounter with New York City FC on Sunday at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
Daniel Royer scored twice for the hosts, once from the penalty spot, as the Red Bulls claimed the Hudson River Derby.
City took the lead in the seventh minute when Heber was on target as they looked to get back to winning ways after losing to the Portland Timbers in MLS and Orlando City in the United States Open Cup.
However, the Red Bulls were level just before half time when Brian White fell theatrically in the box after a challenge from City's Maxime Chanot. There was no doubt it was a penalty but, while Chanot's boot caught White in the stomach, the Red Bulls player grabbed his own throat as he fell.
Regardless Royer made no mistake with his well-struck spot-kick that was out of the reach of Sean Johnson.
Royer was then on hand in the second half to nod in a cross from the right to give the hosts all the points. The victory moves the Red Bulls up to third in the Eastern Conference, behind the Philadelphia Union and DC United, but ahead of Atlanta United, the Montreal Impact and New York City.
Meanwhile, over in the Western Conference, the Seattle Sounders, 14/1 to win the MLS Cup, eased into second place in the standings ahead of the LA Galaxy after a 2-1 triumph over Atlanta United at CenturyLink Field.
Raul Ruidiaz danced through the Atlanta defence to make it 1-0 in the 58th minute and, after Josef Martínez had equalised for the visitors, a defensive slip allowed Harry Shipp to strike with what turned out to be the winner with 20 minutes to play.
