The Colorado Rapids looked like a potential upset victim heading into the fourth round of the US Open Cup and that proved true as they lost to the visiting New Mexico United.

Tied 2-2 after regulation, New Mexico United would ultimately prevail 4-2 on penalties as the USL Western Conference leaders defeated an MLS side for the first time in franchise history in this, their inaugural campaign.

The visitors to the Dick's Sporting Goods Park, in Denver, got off to the perfect start when they scored three minutes into the game.

The Rapids failed to clear a corner from the right and the ball fell kindly for Devon Sandoval to sweep home from close range.

A little over 30 minutes later Colorado was even. Sam Hamilton of New Mexico United gave away a free kick, and was booked as a result, in an aerial challenge and the Rapids capitalized. Diego Rubio heading home after Colorado had pumped the ball into the area.

Shortly after half time the Rapids took the lead as New Mexico was too casual with their passing and Colorado took advantage. Nicolás Mezquida fired home as the United players fell over their own feet in the box.

Ultimately a poorly timed tackle by Axel Sjöberg turned the game. The Colorado defender received his second yellow card and the Rapids were down to ten men for the final 20 minutes or so.

New Mexico needed those 20 minutes, and a couple more, with Kevaughn Frater equalizing deep into stoppage time with a shot from outside the area.

Extra-time could not split the sides and United went through to the Round of 16, 4-2 on penalties, where they will meet Minnesota United FC.

Meanwhile Los Angeles FC are 9/4 to win the MLS this season, with Atlanta United 9/1 and DC United 12/1.
