Rams move to recruit Rooney
Record all-time England goalscorer Wayne Rooney is being linked with a return home from DC United to take up a player-coach role at Derby County.
The 33-year-old forward still has another two years left to run on his contract with the MLS outfit, but is known to have held talks with the Rams and flown back to England to continue talks with the Championship club.
Rooney has scored 25 goals in 45 appearances for DC United, having moved to the United States just over a year ago.
He had previously enjoyed a stellar career with Manchester United and Everton, while on the international stage he scored a record 53 goals in 120 appearances for the Three Lions.
When recently asked about his plans for the future and a possible move into management, Rooney responded: "It's something which I want to stay involved in. I'm obviously still a player and I want to continue to play. When the time is right I can go into coaching or management.
"You never know what comes up and I think, by the end of the contract, I will see how I feel physically and make the decision on whether I can carry on playing or whether I have to stop.
"There was an opportunity for me to go into management straight away and when I do hang my boots up, that decision will be made on what the ambition of the club is first of all, and what my ambitions are."
Derby opened their Championship campaign with a 2-1 victory at Huddersfield Town on Monday evening and the Rams are 5/1 to win promotion and 16/1 to claim the title.
