Tony Pulis believes Middlesbrough remain on track to finish in the Championship play-offs after beating QPR 2-0 on Saturday.

Jonny Howson and Ashley Fletcher grabbed the goals that consigned Steve McClaren's freefalling team to their seventh league defeat in a row.

Pulis had come under-fire for his team's poor recent results at the Riverside Stadium - they had won only two of their previous 11 home league games - but the former Stoke City manager was quick to look at the positives after Boro had won their 15th match of the campaign.

He said: "It's a great result. QPR are not as bad a team as some people think. They've got some good players and they played some good stuff at times.

"[Muhamed] Besic and Jon Obi [Mikel] really controlled the game. They're two good players, when they're playing like that. I thought Dael Fry was the best player on the pitch. Once Ashley Fletcher scores the second goal, it was just a case of managing the game.

"Again, the end-of-term report, if you like, is that we've missed four or five really good opportunities. But we've only lost one game this calendar year in the league, and that was away to Sheffield United with ten men. The boys deserve a tap on the back for that."

Boro are fifth in the Championship table and 5/2 to be promoted this season, while Sheffield United are 4/7 to go up, Norwich City 3/10 and Leeds United 4/11.
