Manchester United overcame an early setback to beat Newcastle 4-1 at Old Trafford.

That victory puts Jose Mourinho's side back in second place in the Premier League but still eight points behind leaders Manchester City.

Dwight Gayle gave Newcastle a surprise lead on 14 minutes when Victor Lindelof slipped in the penalty area allowing him to score from close range.

But United rallied and were ahead at the break thanks to Anthony Martial's 37th-minute header and Chris Smalling's goal in first-half stoppage time.

Paul Pogba then made sure of the points on his return to the team from injury, scoring from close range after a smart header from Marcus Rashford.

And Romelu Lukaku added a fourth in the 70th minute to end a run of seven games without a goal in all competitions.

With United cruising Mourinho introduced Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the bench for the final 15 minutes.
