Phoenix set to add visa players
Wellington Phoenix are reported to be chasing Mexican midfielder Ulises Davila, after seeing young star Sarpreet Singh move to Bayern Munich.
The 28-year-old, who most recently played in the Indian Super League with Delhi Dynamos, is one of two overseas players understood to be arriving in New Zealand later this week.
Davila signed a five-year deal with Chelsea in 2011 but failed to make a single Premier League appearance.
Coach Ufuk Talay said: "There should be a couple of visa players flying in this week, so we'll see those guys when they come in.
"The visa players are going to be influential in changing the game and winning the game so generally those spots, if you look across the A-League, the foreign spots are in the top end of the team."
Talay, who succeeded Mark Rudan as coach at the start of the off-season, said the club could not stand in the way of Singh after Bayern pursued him.
But it has left the Phoenix with another hole to fill, after they had already lost a crop of top players including both their main strikers Roy Krishna and David Williams, who have moved to Indian Super League club ATK as free agents.
Singh's departure, for an undisclosed fee, drops the total number of Phoenix players signed on for next season back down to 11.
Talay has already brought in two new attacking players, New Zealand under-20 forward Callum McCowatt and Western Sydney Wanderers winger Jaushua Sotirio.
McCowatt showed by scoring 21 goals in 16 games for Eastern Suburbs last season that he could be capable of replacing Williams.
"If you look at what he's done last season in the local competition, he was one of the youngest players and scored the most goals," said Talay.
"There's a lot of potential in him to grow and I think him being in a full-time environment will help him reach his ambitions at the same time."
Wellington Phoenix are 25/1 to win the A-League Grand Final, with Western United 20/1.
