Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted he was disappointed to hear Jurgen Klopp's comments regarding the Citizens spending power in the transfer market.

City and Klopp's Liverpool are preparing to go head-to-head in the Community Shield on Sunday for the traditional curtain-raiser for the season at Wembley.

In the build-up to the encounter, Klopp has caused a stir by claiming his side can't match the spending power of the likes of City, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Guardiola has taken exception to those claims and feels they are unfounded, as City have significantly pulled back spending since the manager's first season at the Etihad Stadium.

"Of course [Klopp's suggestion] bothers me. It's not true that we spent £200m every window," said Guardiola.
The former Barcelona boss added: "We cannot spend £200m every season.

"Two seasons ago when we spent a lot it was because I took over a team with 10 or 11 players aged 30 or over. I had to do it.

"Liverpool spent more than £200m last season and can't do it again this season so it's the same. We bought one player Rodri this summer and paid the buyback clause for Angelino and that is the reality. So today clubs cannot spend every single season spending a lot of money.

"I'm not on the comments of other managers because they say what they want. Only I can say that is not true."

Liverpool are 14/5 to win, 11/4 to draw and 10/11 to lose to Man City on Sunday.
