Paris Brunner’s Monaco form keeps Borussia Dortmund return option open

Paris Brunner’s impressive start to the season with AS Monaco has revived interest from former club Borussia Dortmund, who retain a right to match any future offer for the 20-year-old striker.

Working under manager Filipe Luis, Brunner has quickly emerged as one of the early-season success stories at the club. His finishing has helped him make an immediate impact and has reinforced the potential he showed during his time at Dortmund.

His performances have also attracted attention from several European clubs. Dortmund are among those monitoring his progress closely, suggesting the Bundesliga club have not completely ended their interest in a player who previously represented them.

Reports in the German media in recent weeks suggested Dortmund had a clause that could make a future return easier. However, the mechanism is not a conventional buy-back clause.

According to Foot Mercato, Dortmund instead have the right to match any offer made for Brunner by another club. If a potential suitor makes a serious proposal for the Monaco forward, Dortmund would be informed and could choose to equal the terms.

That arrangement gives Dortmund a direct opportunity to remain involved if interest in Brunner develops, while allowing the club to follow his situation closely. It does not, however, guarantee that the striker will return to the Ruhr.

Monaco remain in control of the player’s immediate future. Brunner is under contract with AS Monaco until June 2028, meaning he can continue his development in France while deciding his next move.

His explosive opening to the campaign could ensure that his name appears on the radar of more major European clubs, but there is currently no indication that a return to Dortmund is imminent.

Brunner’s next opportunity to add to his tally will come when AS Monaco play Toulouse in the sixth round of the French championship.
