OSCSA slams Sunshine Stars FC Management over relegation, accuses club of political vendetta and lack of accountability
The Ondo State Stakeholders Coalition for Sports Advancement (OSCSA) has strongly criticised the management of Sunshine Stars FC, accusing it of prioritising political vendetta over transparency following the club’s relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
In a blistering statement issued over the weekend, the coalition condemned the club’s leadership for shifting blame to former Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) Chairman Akin Akinbobola, instead of addressing the systemic failings that led to the club’s downfall.
Tubosun Fakunmi, Chairman of OSCSA, flanked by fan representatives and retired athletes, recalled that Sunshine Stars never suffered relegation during Akinbobola’s tenure, contrasting this with what he called the current administration’s “historic demotion.” He noted that Akinbobola had earlier highlighted critical issues affecting the club, but the management responded with “name-calling and unfounded allegations.”
The coalition also expressed deep disappointment in the Interim Management Committee's silence, calling it a “slap in the face” to loyal fans of the club who have received no apology or proper communication regarding the relegation.
Fakunmi rebuked the club's leadership for engaging in “cowardice and institutional arrogance” instead of showing empathy and accountability, saying:
“To blame relegation on past handlers while simultaneously boasting about strong performances in the final five matches is a laughable contradiction. If those matches were so stellar, why did relegation occur? The math does not lie.”
The coalition also took a swipe at Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stating that stadium renovations and ceremonial appearances at sports festivals are no replacement for solid football governance.
In a direct call to action, OSCSA urged fans and citizens of Ondo State to demand a roadmap for the club’s revival and reject what they described as a “shameful narrative of scapegoating.”
“You deserve a management that meets your anguish with action—not a cabal of football novices who weaponise blame to mask their failures,” Fakunmi conclude.
