New York City FC overcame a sixth minute goal from Fabrice Picault to defeat the Eastern Conference leaders, the Philadelphia Union, 4-2 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Maximiliano Morález and Valentín Castellanos each scored twice for the hosts with Morález scoring both of his from the penalty spot after Castellanos had been brought down on each occasion.

The win leaves New York City FC in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but only six points behind the Union with four games in hand.

New York has two games in hand over the New York Red Bulls and Atlanta United, four over Philadelphia and DC United and five over the Montreal Impact.

City still has to win those games, but at this point they are unbeaten in 13 in all competitions and also in their last 11 MLS games.

Meanwhile DC United moved to within a point of the Union in the standings with a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC. Wayne Rooney scored a late penalty to rescue the home side after Toronto were on track for an upset win.

Nick DeLeon had given the visitors the lead in the 19th minute and with numerous players missing through injury and international duty, Toronto will feel a little aggrieved not to have taken all the points.

Down in Atlanta the defending MLS Champions got the better of the Montreal Impact. Justin Meram scored twice, a 25-yard screamer in the first half, and a goalmouth scramble winner with seven minutes to play, to give United the 2-1 triumph.

Atlanta moves ever closer to the Union, DC United and the Impact with the win and has games in hand over all of those above them in the standings.

New York City FC are priced at 10/1 to win the MLS Cup with LA Galaxy 8/1 and DC United 14/1.
