NPFLDMSuperCup: Enyimba edge Insurance in seven goal thriller
Enyimba International Football Club of Aba got their second win of the NPFL preseason super cup tournament in their second match against Bendel Insurance ot Benin.
The People's Elephant were 4-3 winners at the end of 90 minutes in a pulsating encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State.
The Aba Landlords had to comeback to win a dramatic tie that saw them lead at first before they were behind and had to turn the tide to get a vital victory at the end.
As early as the seventh minute, Enyimba had taken the lead courtesy of Chijioke Mbaoma's strike.
However, Insurance got the equalizer as Divine Nwachukwu stabbed home the ball from close range in the 30th minute.
Five minutes later, there was a turn around of some sort as Insurance scored another as Enyimba's goalie Ojo Olorunleke mis calculated a cross that allowed Micah Ojodumo head into the net.
Insurance's lead didn't last for long as Chijioke Mbaoma delicately lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper via his head three minute later to put the score at equilibrium.
But the drama of goals continued, Insurance got back their lead two minutes later as Sodje Stephens scoted what could be regarded as the goal of the tournament with a stunner from range to restore Insurance's lead.
The first half ended that way with the Aba Boys trailing and Insurance going to the tunnel in high spirit and hope of a first win of the tournament in looking likely.
In the second half, Enyimba was back in it in the 53rd minute as Sunday Okereke bundled the ball home after a scramble off a freekick.
At this time it was all square and it was going to be about the side that wanted the win the most.
Enyimba answered to the call, as Star Boy of the day, a new signing, Chijioke Mbaoma scored his third of the match and his team's fourth to give the Abia team the lead.
Mbaoma face to face with the goalkeeper dispatches the ball well to rattle to the net in the 57th minute.
The match ended 4-3 with Enyimba keeping the back tight with no damaging mistakes to win and top the four-team tournament log.
Chijioke Mbaoma was named the most valuable player of the encounter after his hattrick.
Enyimba play Shooting Stars of Ibadan in their match to consolidate their status in the competition.
