NPFL'23 Match Report: Akwa United sink Nasarawa United to get first win of the season
Akwa United got their first win of the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL 2022/2023 season after beating Nasarawa United in their match day 3 encounter.
The Promise Keepers put three goals pass the Solid Miners who had no reply to the goals at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.
Two second half goals from Ndifreke Effiong propelled the Ibom Boys to an emphatic win against struggling, Nasarawa.
In an encounter pretty dominated by the away side, the first goal didn't come until late in the first half after pressure mounted by Akwa.
James Ajako scored a screamer of a goal firing in Leonard's flick on from a freekick in the 41st minute to give Akwa United their first goal of the season and the lead.
In the second half, Akwa were on the ascendency again doing enough to score a second. This time two minutes into the half.
Ex Enyimba midfielder, Cyril Olisema delivered a good ball into the box from a freekick for Ndifreke Effiong to head it home.
Nasarawa United pushed to reduced the deficit, but saves by Jean Efala left the score line the same in the 51st and 57th minute.
In the 63rd minute, the home team got a freekick which was well hit by Gabriel Ugochukwu but it rattled the net and was tucked away by the goalkeeper.
However, Effiong got his second goal about eleven minutes later after a brilliant solo goal to make it 0-3.
At this point it seemed home and dry for the visiting team, but Nasarawa's Ugochukwu Gabriel well struck free kicks in the 77th and 83rd almost rattled the leading team, but goalkeeper Efala was there to make the saves.
It ended 3-0 in favour of Akwa United with their first win while Nasarawa United's search for their first win continues.
