The Nigeria Professional Football League final kicked off on the 8th of January with the match day one fixture between Akwa United and Bendel Insurance at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Bendel Insurance returned to the league after 3 years, 7 months and 19 days to hand defeat to former champions, Akwa United in the game that ended two goals to nil.

Imade Osehenkhoe and Ismael Seriki's first-half goals secured the win for the newly promoted Edo Arsenal.

It was their first away win since 2005 in the Nigeria top flight league.

Divine Nwachukwu ran through the right flank of the home team, crossed into the box for a well-positioned Imade Osehenkhoe to slide in and  score in the 38th minute.

Ismeal Sarki tucked in from a corner after a goalkeeping error to double the lead for Insurance in the 41st minute.

The Orange Boys had the lion share of possessions with attempts after attempts, but it yielded nothing productive to change the score line.
