Rivers United on Sunday got their league title defense to a winning start against Lobi Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in one of the match day 1 fixtures of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

It was quiet a difficult one, but the defending champions did enough to get all three points and give their title challenge a good take off.

The boys Rivers survived through a late minute penalty by Kenechukwu Agu  to seal a 2-1 win  against the Ortom Boys.

Nevertheless, Rivers United are still on course to retain the league they won last year according to the coach of the side, Stanley Eguma.

In a post match reaction, the technical adviser of the side said "We've started building a new team and we are moving forward. Last season we ended up as champions and this season, we want to defend it."

Rivers United head to Akure for their next game against Sunshine Stars on Thursday at the Akure Stadium.
