The 2026 season of the Nationwide League One is set to get underway on Friday with a standout opening fixture and a major technological upgrade, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The curtain-raiser, scheduled to take place at McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi, will see Flight FC take on NYSC FC, with the match to be live-streamed via a newly launched website powered by AI camera technology.

Speaking ahead of the new campaign, NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo expressed excitement over the league’s readiness and the innovations introduced for the season.

“We are excited to start the season today (Friday) at McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State. The match between Flight FC and NYSC FC promises to be an engaging one and will highlight NLO’s style of football,” he said.

The opening game is slated for Friday, April 10, 2026, with other fixtures set to commence the following weekend. The fixture schedule has been designed around a stadium-based league format to ensure adequate rest for players and better planning across matchdays.

In another notable development, the league confirmed that group winners will be determined through a single-leg playoff system, a move aimed at promoting fairness and transparency, even though it may not appeal to all stakeholders.

With new innovations and a structured format in place, the NLO is poised for an exciting and competitive 2026 season.
