Nico Williams says he turned down approaches from Barcelona, Arsenal, Paris St-Germain and other leading European clubs because he wanted to remain at Athletic Club.

The 24-year-old attracted widespread attention during Euro 2024, after which he was linked with a move to a number of the continent’s biggest clubs.

Barcelona were strongly tipped to sign Williams that summer, with reports suggesting he could join his friend and Spain team-mate Lamine Yamal at the Catalan club. However, Williams chose to stay at Athletic Club and signed a long-term contract.

Speculation about his future has continued, with reports linking him with a move away despite that agreement.

Earlier this month, Sport Witness reported comments from Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, in which he named Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and PSG among the clubs associated with the forward.

Those remarks reportedly caused concern for Williams’ brother, Inaki. After Athletic’s 4-0 LaLiga victory over Getafe, Nico addressed the situation and insisted that the final decision over his career rests with him and his family.

“Felix was wrong with what he said; things aren’t like that,” said the World Cup winner.

“The final decision is made by me, my brother, and the family. What happens at home, only the three of us know.

“I’ve never doubted being here. I’ve had countless offers. I could have left, and I’ve always been clear about staying here. My intention to be here cannot be questioned.

“I told Barca, Arsenal, PSG, and many others no, because I want to be here. I hope people understand.”

Williams’ comments represent his clearest explanation yet for rejecting the interest in him and reaffirm his commitment to Athletic Club. He also sought to distance himself from the impression created by Tainta’s comments, saying they did not accurately reflect the position of either him or his family.

Despite the continued rumours, Williams said his decision to remain at Athletic Club had never been in doubt.
