Chris Giwa, the embattled factional leader of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has said that the police personnel who ‘invaded’ the NFF secretariat on Friday after he occupied the office only came to protect him.

This is even as he told Independent that he has no fear over his mandate, saying his position as NFF ‘boss’ is not under threat.

“I am secured as NFF President; my position and mandate given to me is not under threat,”

Also speaking on Saturday, Giwa, who is the proprietor of Giwa Football Club, said against generally-held view that he was arrested at the glass house; the police merely sensed danger and came to the rescue of those at the secretariat.

“Let me correct an impression that Ambassador Giwa was arrested; I was not arrested.

“You know, the police are for everybody and the duty of the security agency is to protect lives and property. I resume today (Friday) by the grace of God after getting my mandate through the court order.

“Somehow, maybe there was a misinformation that there was a misunderstanding taking place there (NFF secretariat).

“So I think the police thought there was a problem and they needed to chip in to maintain peace there. The police did not even invite me; they came for our safety because if you watch when we were stepping out, the gate was locked and it looked as if there was a problem, so it is the duty of the police,” he said.

Continuing, Giwa said: “God forbid; we are not praying for anything negative to happen but if it does, so many people will be called to question.

“So there is no problem because I am going to be in the office fully on Monday. By 8a.m. I am resuming fully in the secretariat and the work continues,” he concluded.

Recall on Friday that Giwa walked into the Zone 7 premises of the NFF at about 4:00pm despite the presence of a police van placed there.

He spent about 30 minutes in the building and granted interviews to journalists as well as trying to take charge of administrative duties before a detachment of policemen allegedly asked him to leave the premises.

He was escorted by policemen who led him to the Divisional Headquarters, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.
