New York City FC can jump past at least DC United and the Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference standings on Sunday when they play the Portland Timbers at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
New York currently sit fifth in the table, tied on points with Atlanta United FC, but having won two less games than the defending MLS champions.
City have also played two games less than Atlanta and the disparity in matches played is even more marked against DC United, the Impact and the Philadelphia Union ahead of them in the table.
While New York have played just 16 games so far in the campaign, the Union and DC United have played 20 and Montreal 21.
As such City could well move to the top of the Eastern Conference with even modest results in their games in hand.
Undefeated in 14 games in all competitions, New York are very much the team in form. Maximiliano Morález, Jesus Medina and Ebenezer Ofori were all on target last time out in a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders.
Meanwhile the Philadelphia Union and Orlando City SC will try again after Saturday's fixture was postponed because of the weather.
The Union lead DC United by four points in the standings with Montreal a further point adrift.
The Impact lost a real opportunity to move past DC United, and to put pressure on Philadelphia, on Saturday when they fell 2-3 to Minnesota United.
Mason Toye scored twice for the visitors who twice came from a goal behind as they moved into fourth place in the Western Conference with the win.
